Ellington Airport (EFD)

Opened: 1917, originally a military air field, named Ellington Field, for pilot Lt. Eric L. Ellington

City of Houston purchased Ellington from the US military in 1984.

Ellington Airport is currently operated by the Houston Airport System as a joint civilian & military airport. A Class IV Airport, Air Traffic Control Tower operates 24 hrs.

The airport currently serves civilian General Aviation, NASA, Civil Air Patrol, Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard, US Coast Guard

Wings Over Houston, a major flight show, is held each year at Ellington Airport.

Location: approx. 15 miles southeast of downtown Houston, and 9 miles south of Houston Hobby Airport.

Size: 2,200 acres, with 228 acres reserved for military and NASA use.
